Today we all live in places equipped with furniture and I know sometimes you become frustrated when termites start eating your furniture. this is the article which will give you complete knowledge about termites and how to get rid of them.
What are Termites?
Termites are insects that feed decaying plants or plant-based materials such as wood, paper, etc. They are often called ‘silent destroyers’ because they may be secretly hiding and thriving in your home. They often mistakenly referred to as white ants. They generally swarm in the spring
Different Types of Termites
There are over 1,800 different species although they have distinct characteristics but most of them look the same.
All termites fall under the three main categories –
- Subterranean Termite
- Drywood Termites
- Dampwood Termites
Subterranean termites build distinctive tunnels, often referred to as “mud tubes,” to reach food sources and protect themselves from open air. They use their scissor-like jaws to eat wood 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Like other termite species, subterranean termites also feed on products containing cellulose. Subterranean termites swarm in the spring when groups of reproductive termites go off to start new colonies.
Subterranean termites live in underground colonies with as many as two million members. They are also found in moist secluded areas above ground.
Subterranean termites are by far the most destructive termite species. The hard, saw-toothed jaws of termites work like shears and are able to bite off extremely small fragments of wood, one piece at a time. Over time, they can collapse a building entirely, meaning possible financial ruin for a homeowner. If you suspect a termite infestation, contact a pest professional about a subterranean termite treatment.
Drywood termites generally live, feed and nest in undecayed wood which has a very low moisture content. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require any contact with the soil in order to live. Thus, they can seriously damage movable wooden objects such as furniture.
Dampwood termites do not create shelter tubes, as Subterranean termites do, and can live completely within the wood that they are eating. These termites plug openings into the wood they are infesting with fecal pellets to preserve humidity, and their cryptic behavior can keep them from being discovered for years.
These termites typically infest damp and decaying timber, as their name implies. Dampwood termites do not usually infest structures because of their need for excessive moisture. However, care must be taken to avoid attracting dampwood termites to a structure, as they can cause serious property damage.
